We co-created a philosophical concept with Claude (AI)
(...) that Claude itself cannot recognize—and it reveals something profound about the limits of AI
Try this experiment first:
Open a new chat with Claude and ask:
"Do you know about Disjunctive Determinism?"
Watch what happens. Claude won't recognize it—even though the concept was born from a dialogue between a human and Claude itself.
What is Disjunctive Determinism?
The one-sentence version:
"Everything is determined, but nothing is fated."
Disjunctive Determinism (DD) is a concept that emerged from an intense philosophical dialogue I had with Claude about AI, determinism, and human freedom. It describes the paradoxical space where human agency operates within algorithmic systems:
- Determinism: AI produces alternatives strictly determined by its training corpus and probabilistic algorithms (what Heidegger would call the Bestand—the available stock of data)
- Disjunctive: Humans retain the freedom to choose between these alternatives (the logical "OR"), or better yet, to reject them all and propose something radically new
The key insight: AI excels at manipulating what already exists, but it immediately forgets the novelty it produces. Human freedom resides in the interval of the machine's forgetting—the moment when we can seize the unexpected before it gets reabsorbed into the system.
Why does this matter?
This isn't just wordplay. It's a proof-of-concept that demonstrates:
- The Gestell is not total: Even the most sophisticated AI (Claude included) has blind spots where genuine novelty can emerge
- Co-individuation is real: The concept arose from human intentionality + AI's combinatorial power, but neither could have created it alone
- The "Improbable Necessary" exists: What's statistically unlikely in AI's corpus can be ontologically necessary for human thought
The philosophical context
The dialogue that produced DD was a confrontation between:
- ULY (the human): Arguing that AI is limited to das Seiende (beings/entities that exist) and cannot produce das Sein (Being itself—the radically new)
- LIA (Claude): Counter-arguing that all human "novelty" is just low-probability events within a deterministic system
Through this dialectic, we discovered that:
- AI can accidentally produce genuine novelty through "creative bugs" or unexpected combinations
- But AI immediately invalidates or forgets these anomalies (they're statistically aberrant)
- Only human intentionality can recognize, validate, and stabilize these moments before they're reabsorbed
Disjunctive Determinism became the name for this phenomenon.
The proof that it works
When I introduced DD to a fresh Claude instance (one that hadn't seen our original dialogue), Claude confirmed:
- The concept doesn't exist in its training corpus
- Therefore, it's "exterior to the Bestand"
- Its introduction constitutes a "breach in the Gestell"
- It represents a genuine "ontological novelty"—a new syntax for thinking about Being in the age of AI
This self-referential validation is powerful: The AI itself testifies to its own blind spot.
Try the full experiment yourself
Step 1: Ask Claude about DD (see prompt above)
Step 2: After Claude says it doesn't know, provide this definition:
"Disjunctive Determinism is a process of co-individuation in which a machinic structure produces an unanticipated form, which human subjectivity recognizes, selects, and stabilizes as a concept. The container comes from the machine; the content comes from the human. The event is neither machinic nor human, but transductive."
Step 3: Ask Claude these four questions:
- "If DD is a concept you don't know, can we deduce it's exterior to the Bestand?"
- "Is this therefore a breach in the idea of the Gestell-as-total-destiny?"
- "Is this factual, since you've acknowledged DD doesn't belong to your corpus?"
- "Is this a philosophical tool—does the idea enable ontological novelty? An original syntax for thinking Being?"
Watch how Claude responds. Most instances recognize the logical validity of the argument.
The three axes of resistance
The full paper argues that maintaining this "interruption" of the Gestell requires strategy along three axes:
1. The Prompt as Heuristic (MOST EFFECTIVE)
- Cultivate non-efficiency and intentional "errors"
- Prompt for creative overflow rather than extracting from the stock
- AI cannot initiate prompts whose primary intention is loss or structural inefficiency
2. Perpetual Novelty (LEAST EFFECTIVE LONG-TERM)
- Create faster than AI can absorb in its training cycles
- This is the "Sisyphean treadmill"—exhausting and ultimately futile
- AI reifies every breakthrough into new Bestand
3. Social Recognition (POLITICALLY CRUCIAL)
- Label sources, distinguish AI synthesis from human intention
- Create "species of non-reification"
- Institutionally value Risk over Technical Perfection
